Food stamps: January SNAP payments worth up to $1,751 for California residents end in five days

California’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will wrap up sending payments worth up to $1,751 to qualified residents in five days.

The SNAP program, known as CalFresh in California, began issuing payments on Monday, and benefits are sent from the 1st of the month through the 10th. Arrival dates for those who receive benefits nationwide depend on a household’s Social Security number, last name, or case number. In California, payments are distributed depending on recipients’ case numbers.

The payout each beneficiary will get is influenced by multiple factors, such as household size, income limits, and additional assets. The maximum payment is $291 for a household of one, $973 for a household of four, and $1,751 for a household of eight. Up to $219 is added to a household’s food stamps for each member after eight.

SNAP benefits are loaded onto an electronic benefits transfer card monthly. Recipients can swipe the card at grocery stores like a debit card to purchase eligible food products such as fruits, vegetables, bread, meat, poultry, and drinks. SNAP benefits cannot be used for products such as pet food, alcohol, and household items.

Around 13% of California’s population receives CalFresh assistance, amounting to nearly 5 million Californians each month, per data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
