Food stamps: Michigan January SNAP benefits worth up to $1,751 arrive tomorrow

January 02, 2024 11:18 AM

Michigan households that collect payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can expect them tomorrow.

SNAP-participating households will receive payments from Jan. 3 to Jan. 21 on odd days. The specific arrival date for food stamps depends on a household’s last digit of the SNAP ID number.

Recipients with ID numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 will receive their payments on the third, fifth, seventh, ninth, and 11th, respectively. ID numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 will collect benefits on the 13th, 15th, 17th, 19th, and 21st, respectively.

Those who became eligible for SNAP benefits after Oct. 21 or after their ID number passes will still collect food stamps for January and will not need to wait for the next round in February.

Around 13% of Michigan’s population, amounting to 1.34 million people, receive food stamps. The average payment per household member per month is $181.

Michigan received an increase in its food stamps due to the cost-of-living adjustments for fiscal 2024. Until September 2024, 48 states and Washington, D.C., excluding Hawaii and Alaska, will receive the same maximum benefits.

In Michigan, the maximum payment is $291 for a household of one, $1,155 for a household of five, and $1,751 for a household of eight. An additional $219 is added as a maximum for each additional household member above eight.

Eligible households can use their SNAP benefits at participating locations, such as farmers markets and grocery stores, with the payments intended to be spent on healthy foods. Payments are reloaded each month onto an electronic benefit transfer card. In Michigan, the EBT card is called a “Bridge Card.”
