The average SNAP benefit amount per household member in Virginia is $181. Approximately 9% of the state’s population, or roughly 794,600 people, are receiving assistance paying for food through SNAP in Virginia.

SNAP benefits in Virginia are sent out based on the last digit of the household’s SNAP case number. Those with a case number ending in 6-9 will see their benefits on Saturday.

Those with a case number ending in 0-3 should have received their benefits on Oct. 1 and those with a case number ending in 4-5 collected their benefits on Oct. 4. Households who become eligible for SNAP after Oct. 7 or after their case number has passed will still receive SNAP benefits for October and will not need to wait until November.

SNAP benefits in Virginia may be used in eligible stores to purchase “food or food products meant to be eaten by people,” along with seeds and food-producing plants, among other things.

Items not deemed eligible for the food stamps program include nonfood items, alcohol, tobacco, medicines, gardening items, cleaning or paper products, pet food, or prepared hot foods.

In the U.S., 48 states receive the same maximum monthly payments. Hawaii and Alaska are the only two states that have different payment amounts.
