France combating bedbug infestation ahead of 2024 Olympics

The French government has vowed action to “reassure and protect” the public after several videos have surfaced showing an infestation of bedbugs crawling all over Paris public metro trains and bus seats, while moviegoers are reportedly getting bit by bedbugs at local cinemas throughout the country’s capital of Paris.

French Transport Minister Clement Beaune has vowed to “undertake further action” to combat the outbreak of the bedbugs.

“You have to understand that in reality, no one is safe. Obviously there are risk factors, but in reality, you can catch bedbugs anywhere and bring them home,” Emmanuel Gregoire, the deputy mayor of Paris, said to French TV station LCI on Friday.

Johanna Fite from the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety, or ANSES, told CNN that the increase in bedbugs is “due to the movement of people” staying short term and bringing bedbugs in their luggage.

She noted that the bedbugs are becoming increasingly resistant to insecticide treatments.

“We are observing more and more bedbug populations, which are resistant. So, there is no miracle treatment to get rid of them,” Fite said.

The news of the bedbugs comes as the City of Lights is wrapping its semiannual Fashion Week and the city is preparing to host the XXIII Olympic Summer Games next year starting July 26.
