Garland says there is only ‘one rule’ of law for both Republicans and Democrats

Attorney General Merrick Garland pledged Sunday there is “only one rule” of law in the United States despite critics who have attempted to argue he is the head of a “Biden DOJ.”
“We do not have one rule for Republicans and another rule for Democrats. We don’t have one rule for foes and another for friends,” Garland said on 60 Minutes. “We don’t have one rule for the powerful and another for the powerless, for the rich or for the poor, or based on ethnicity.”

“We have only one rule, and that one rule … we follow the facts and the law and reach a decision required by the Constitution, and we protect civil liberties.”
Trust is a major factor, according to Garland, and trust in the norms of the DNA of the Department of Justice, which runs the investigations.
Two major figures under investigation by Garland’s Department of Justice are former President Donald Trump and Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.
Regarding the former, Trump faces two federal trials.
He is accused of withholding classified documents and is also under investigation for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
“The Justice Department has general practices about not making significant overt steps or charging within a month or so of an election. We are clearly outside that time frame in these cases,” the attorney general said in response to the timing of the cases against the former president.
“Prosecutors, special counsel, they follow the facts and the law where they lead when they’ve got the amount of evidence necessary to make a charging decision and decide if a charge is warranted. That’s when they bring their cases.”
The idea that the investigation is intended to hamper Trump’s chances in 2024 is “absolutely not true,” according to Garland.
“Justice Department prosecutors are nonpartisan,” he said. “They don’t allow partisan considerations to play any role in their considerations.”

Trump’s case is being led by a special counsel, as is the investigation into Hunter Biden.
Critics have alleged that the Justice Department is taking it easy on the president’s son, which is something that Garland denies.
“This investigation began under David Weiss,” Garland said. “David Weiss is a long-standing career prosecutor and was appointed by Mr. Trump as a United States attorney for the District of Delaware. I promised at my nomination hearing that I would continue him on in that position and that I would not interfere with this investigation.”

Weiss is responsible for any decisions in the case against Hunter Biden, he said, and the White House is not influencing the case.
“Absolutely not,” Garland said when asked if the president could influence the case against his son.
