The national average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped on Tuesday to $3.063, according to AAA. This is the lowest national average price for regular gas since June 2021, when the average cost was $3.064 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Since then, high gas prices, at over $3 per gallon and, for a brief period of time, over $4 per gallon, have plagued drivers in the country.
High gas prices have hampered the Biden administration for over three years. After hitting record highs in 2022 – the highest in the nation’s history – gas prices began to decrease later in the year. After another spike in 2023, gas prices began declining again in May 2024. Nevertheless, high gas prices have hampered the Biden administration.
Yet despite this string of decreases at the pumps, gas prices remain higher today than when Trump was in office from January 2017 to January 2021. Gas prices continue to fluctuate across the nation, and it remains to be seen what will happen to gas prices during Trump’s second term.
Currently, Hawaii has the most expensive gas prices in the country, costing $4.573 per gallon. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has the least expensive gas in the nation, costing $2.565 per gallon. Delaware
Gas prices in Delaware rose again on Tuesday, climbing up way past $3 a gallon to a new price of $3.12. This was nearly six cents higher since Friday’s price of $3.068 per gallon. Until recently, gas prices in the First State remained in the same range, fluctuating between $3.00 and $2.95 per gallon. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state cost $2.957, an increase over 16 cents in the last seven days. As a result of the surge in Delaware’s gas prices, it is now more expensive for a gallon of regular gas on Tuesday than it was a month ago when it cost $3.08.
Maryland
Gas prices in Maryland slightly dropped on Tuesday, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas now at $3.203. Overall, Tuesday’s price was still an increase since Friday, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.167. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state cost $3.046, an increase of nearly 16 cents in seven days. Prices in Maryland had been trending downward for the last month, even briefly falling to under $3 per gallon, before the recent surge. Gas prices are more expensive on Tuesday in Maryland than a month ago, when regular gas cost $3.167 per gallon.
Virginia
Gas prices in Virginia continued the current trend, hovering around the $3 per gallon range. On Tuesday, the state’s average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped slightly to $2.997. On Friday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Virginia was 3.015. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state was $2.984. Overall, gas prices in Virginia on Tuesday are less expensive than a month ago when Virginians paid $3.093 per gallon for regular gas.

Washington, D.C.
Gas prices in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday decreased a bit, coming in at $3.257. Like Virginia, gas prices in the nation’s capital have remained relatively steady in recent weeks, fluctuating between $3.25 and $3.30 over the last month. This pattern continues as the price of regular gas a week ago was $3.252 and a month ago, it was $3.305.
