Friday’s price is over five cents per gallon, less expensive than last week’s gas price, which was $3.35 per gallon. It’s also over 16 cents cheaper than last month, when regular gas was $3.462 per gallon. The decrease in gas prices has been felt throughout the country, as there are now ten states where the average price for regular gas is below $3 per gallon: Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, and South Carolina. Kansas is on the verge of being the 11th state soon, coming in with an average price for regular gas of $3.004 per gallon.

Gas prices remain an important issue heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has to indicate how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, they have decreased in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Delaware

Gas prices continued to drop in Delaware on Friday coming in at $3.146, the lowest in the Delmarva region. This was a slight drop from Thursday’s price of $3.165 per gallon. Gas prices also decreased compared to a week ago, when the cost was $3.168 per gallon. And sticking with the national trend, gas prices in the First State on Thursday are lower than a month ago, when they cost $3.288 per gallon.

Maryland

In Maryland, gas prices fell to $3.223 on Friday. This was a slight decrease from a week ago, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.269. Like other states in the region, falling gas prices have been a recent trend in Maryland, starting nearly a month ago, when the average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.396.

Virginia

The average price for regular gas in Virginia on Friday is $3.162 per gallon. And in Virginia, like rest of the country, gas is more affordable today than a week ago, when regular gas cost $3.219 per gallon. Gas prices in the state are also less expensive than a month ago, when it cost $3.317 for a gallon of regular.

Washington, D.C.

Gas prices in Washington, D.C. also declined where the average cost for a gallon of regular gas on Friday is $3.54. This price is the highest in the region and much higher than the national average. Nevertheless, gas prices have been decreasing recently. A week ago in Washington, a gallon of regular gas was $3.588, and a month ago, it was $3.698.

Mississippi

Mississippi had the least expensive regular gas prices in the country on Friday, at $2.824 per gallon. Like many states throughout the nation, this price was a decrease from last week, when a gallon of regular was $2.878 in Mississippi. A month ago, gas prices were slightly higher but still the cheapest in the nation, at $2.953 per gallon.

California

California has dethroned Hawaii as the state with the most expensive gas in the nation on Friday. The average price for a gallon of regular gas cost $4.666. This price slightly edged out Hawaii, which has a price of $4.653 per gallon to end the work week. Unlike much of the country, gas prices in California have been increasing. For example, yesterday, a gallon of regular gas in the Golden State cost $4.657. A week ago, regular gas cost $4.634 per gallon and a month ago, it was $4.621.
