Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) had his pick-up game of basketball in China captured on video and shared to social media, where he took flack for his performance.
Newsom was seen in the video playing among elementary-aged children. As he took the ball in his left hand at the top of the key, a boy stepped closer to block Newsom, only for the governor to continue his drive, hitting the boy and knocking both of them off their feet and onto the court.
ONLY NEWSOM CAN GO TO CHINA? CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR TAKES HIS SHOW ON THE ROAD
The California governor wrapped the boy in a bear hug to keep him from hitting the ground first, while Newsom hit the ground hip-first. Newsom rolled over so the boy was on top of his chest rather than the court and playfully spanked him with a smile. The boy smiled with him as he stood up from the ground, seemingly unscathed.
OMG my governor is so cool and relatable! Watch him take out a small child while desperately trying to emulate Barack Obama while on a foreign visit to one of the world’s leading dictators. https://t.co/2wXZkso7W1

“OMG my governor is so cool and relatable! Watch him take out a small child while desperately trying to emulate Barack Obama while on a foreign visit to one of the world’s leading dictators,” a California school district board member wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Unironically the most important moment in US-China diplomacy in the past 10 years,” Matthew Pines, a cybersecurity executive, wrote.
“Awful video. When phony politicians try to be relatable, stupid things happen,” Ohio Republican Chairman Alex Triantafilou wrote. “Adult men don’t play with strangers who are small children under normal circumstances. This is weird and creepy and makes phony Gavin Newsome [sic] look very bad.”

Newsom is fresh from his trip to China, where he met with President Xi Jinping. The Democratic governor was criticized for not discussing the country’s human rights abuses.
Instead, the governor focused during his visits to Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing on discussions around the climate. His talking points included electric vehicle transitions, offshore wind power, conserving lands and oceans, and air pollution.
