GOP contender McCormick gaining ground on Casey in Pennsylvania Senate race: Poll – Washington Examiner

Republican David McCormick is narrowly trailing Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) in Pennsylvania’s highly contested U.S. Senate race, according to a new poll.

In a hypothetical general election showdown, Casey is leading, 45% to McCormick’s 41%, with 14% undecided, per an Emerson College Polling/the Hill survey of 1,000 registered Pennsylvania voters from Sunday to Wednesday. Compared to a February poll in which he was 10 points behind, McCormick has begun to close the gap on the Democratic incumbent’s lead.

The poll revealed that 9% of Trump voters plan to vote for Casey, compared to the 3% of Biden voters who plan to split the ticket and cast their ballot for McCormick.

In his effort to replace outgoing Republican Sen. Pat Toomey in 2022, McCormick lost the Republican nomination to physician Mehmet Oz, whom Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) beat in the general election. Now, McCormick is giving his Senate dreams another chance in trying to unseat Casey.

The race, however, is an uphill battle for McCormick, as Casey has a strong presence in the state and has served three terms in the Senate. McCormick, a combat veteran and businessman, could serve as an advantageous contrast to Casey’s long history as a career politician.

Biden’s poor approval rating among Pennsylvania voters could help boost McCormick ahead of his opponent in a race that could decide which party controls the upper chamber. The state’s primary will take place on April 23.
