GOP governors and ‘God’s Army’ caravan descend on border with urgent call to end immigration crisis

Fifteen Republican governors and a conservative convoy of truckers that has dubbed itself “God’s Army” will descend on the southern border this weekend as part of separate events to draw attention to the illegal immigration crisis.

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) will host leaders from 14 other red states in the McAllen, Texas, area of the Rio Grande Valley on Sunday afternoon for a briefing on the state’s effort to bolster security at the Mexico border and hold a press conference about the impact of “President Joe Biden’s reckless open border policies.”

In the lead-up to Abbott’s border event, Americans frustrated with the more than 9 million people who have been observed or encountered while illegally entering the country since 2021 will take matters into their own hands.

An online effort known as Take Our Border Back has organized a cross-country caravan to several spots on the southern border, where attendees will drive in a procession with final rallies in Arizona, California, and Texas on Saturday.

“The Take Our Border Back leadership team asks you to join us in praying for our nation, elected officials, and uniting our country,” the convoy’s website reads. “Our peaceful convoy will help all Americans have a respectful conversation about the future of our country. The time has come to unite as a country and pray.”

Convoy organizer Kim Yeater said she hopes for 700,000 protesters to join in on the journey, though numbers have been far lower.

One bloc of the caravan departed Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Monday with scheduled stops in Jacksonville, Florida, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The group was slated to leave Louisiana for Dripping Springs, Texas, for a Thursday evening pep rally.

From Central Texas, some caravaners would continue driving west to Yuma, Arizona, expecting to arrive Saturday afternoon, while others would go south to Quemado and Eagle Pass, Texas.

Rallies will take place Saturday in Quemado, Texas, and Yuma, Arizona, with the main rally in San Ysidro, California. From San Ysidro, some will drive to Yuma for an evening event.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and rock ‘n’ roll performer Ted Nugent led the pep rally in Dripping Springs on Thursday evening.

“I do want to thank you for being in the arena, knowing that now more than ever, it is required for us to stand up and fight for what is right,” Palin said.”It is unconscionable, it is treasonous what our own federal government is doing to us in actually sanctioning a foreign invasion of our country across that border.”

Abbott’s event at the other end of the border in southeast Texas comes one week since the state stood firm in its fight against the Biden administration at the border.

On Jan. 10, the state seized city land in Eagle Pass, Texas, and evicted federal Border Patrol agents who state officials said were cutting razor wire to admit and arrest illegal immigrants who crossed the river.

Last week, Abbott said the state was justified in its action to have state soldiers and police defend its border, citing the Biden administration’s failure to do more to defend the state.
