A group of House GOP lawmakers from New York announced on Wednesday that they were introducing an expulsion resolution against Rep. George Santos (R-NY) following his latest federal indictment.

The embattled congressman was hit with new conspiracy, wire fraud, false statements, falsification of records, aggravated identity theft, and credit card fraud charges on Tuesday evening. Santos was already facing 13 federal counts related to wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.

“Today, I’ll be introducing an expulsion resolution to rid the People’s House of fraudster George Santos,” Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY), who is leading the effort, posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

D’Esposito said the resolution will be co-sponsored by Reps. Nick LaLota (R-NY), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Marc Molinaro (R-NY), Nick Langworthy (R-NY), and Brandon Williams (R-NY).

The House voted to send an expulsion resolution to the House Ethics Committee in March after the first indictment against Santos dropped. Speaking to reporters in the Capitol on Wednesday, D’Esposito said, “I know that ethics has been a little busy, but it’s time that we see some results.”

“After the latest indictment, I think it’s clear that he’s not fit to serve in the House of Representatives,” he said of Santos. “He’s a stain on the institution, and that’s why the New York freshmen have come together. He’s also a stain on our state.”

Most of Santos’s home-state colleagues had already called on him to resign, and the New York Republicans behind the expulsion push also introduced legislation in March preventing lawmakers convicted of financial crimes from profiting off the abuses.

While the legislation did not specifically mention Santos, D’Esposito said at the time that the measure was meant to hold the embattled lawmaker accountable.

“This legislation is about ensuring that elected officials who break the public’s trust are held accountable for their wrongdoings,” D’Esposito said. “No one should be able to profit off lying to the American people and swindling their way into the People’s House.”

For his part, Santos has vowed to fight both sets of charges and refuses to resign.
