In 2015, Blanchard conspired with her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to murder her allegedly abusive mother, Clauddinnea “Dee Dee” Blanchard. The mother convinced the young Gypsy Blanchard that she was severely ill, suffering from ailments such as leukemia, muscular dystrophy, vision and hearing impairments, and seizures, when she, in fact, wasn’t. She was subject to a variety of harmful treatments and surgeries later deemed unnecessary.
Godejohn, who carried out the murder, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He and Blanchard have since separated, with the latter marrying a Louisiana teacher behind bars.
“I’m ready for freedom,” Blanchard told People magazine in an interview shortly before her release. “I’m ready to expand and I think that goes for every facet of my life.”
She expressed regret over the murder and urged others in abusive situations not to resort to murder.

“I want to make sure that people in abusive relationships do not resort to murder,” Blanchard said. “It may seem like every avenue is closed off but there is always another way. Do anything, but don’t take this course of action.”
The story of Blanchard and the murder of her mother earned widespread attention, being made into the 2019 Hulu miniseries The Act.
