Harris tells South Carolina voters to ‘believe’ Trump will be a dictator on ‘day one’

ORANGEBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA — Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a biting denouncement of former President Donald Trump during a “Get Out The Vote” rally at South Carolina State University Friday, marking the final event for the Biden-Harris campaign ahead of Saturday’s “First in the Nation” primary.

The choice to have Harris close out South Carolina is especially notable, given the premium the campaign has placed on the Palmetto State as a case study to push back on narratives concerning President Joe Biden’s age and a perceived slide in support among minorities, black voters in particular, heading into the 2024 general election.

Harris was joined Friday by SCSU alumnus Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison, and a host of other Biden campaign surrogates.

After summarizing the work Biden has done during his first three years in office, the vice president claimed that the administration is “guided by the fundamental belief that we work for you, the American people.”

“Sadly, however, that is not true for everyone, case in point, Donald Trump. Former President Trump has made clear, time and time again, his fight is not for the people. He fights for himself,” she continued.

Harris proceeded to attack Trump for his attempts to weaponize the Department of Justice, work overturning Roe v. Wade, and for stoking “the fires of hate and bigotry and racism and xenophobia for his own power and political gain.”

“The former president openly talks about his admiration for dictators and has vowed that he will be a dictator on day one,” Harris concluded. “As the great Maya Angelou said, ‘when someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time.’ Well, the former president has told us who he is, and it is on us then to recognize the profound threat he poses to our democracy and our freedoms.”

Biden himself campaigned in Columbia, South Carolina, over the previous weekend. His trip included visits to multiple black churches, a black barbershop, and a speech delivered at the state Democratic Party’s “First in the Nation” celebratory dinner.

However, the president will not return to the state for a DNC election night event. In the week between Biden’s visit and the primary on Saturday, the president opted to campaign in Florida and Michigan and attended the dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base for three service members killed in Jordan. He will hit the West Coast on Saturday for campaign stops in California and Nevada.
