Harris to highlight ‘harm’ caused by abortion limits on national tour

Vice President Kamala Harris is advancing her profile as President Joe Biden‘s spokeswoman regarding the importance of abortion access, launching a national tour focused on the issue before next year’s election.

The first stop of Harris’s tour will be in Wisconsin on Jan. 22, the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark abortion case that the Supreme Court overturned last year.

“During the vice president’s reproductive freedoms tour, she will host events that highlight the harm caused by these abortion bans while sharing stories of those who have been impacted,” the White House said in a statement.

Harris has spearheaded the White House‘s political response to the repeal of Roe, with more than 50 events in at least 16 states that have been attended by state lawmakers and officials, in addition to healthcare providers, faith leaders, students, and other abortion access advocates. It also coincides with Harris’s outreach to students as part of her “Fight for Our Freedoms” college tour, through which she has traveled to eight states and engaged more than 15,000 students.

“Extremists across our country continue to wage a full-on attack against hard-won, hard-fought freedoms as they push their radical policies — from banning abortion in all 50 states and criminalizing doctors, to forcing women to travel out of state in order to get the care they need,” Harris said in a statement. “I will continue to fight for our fundamental freedoms while bringing together those throughout America who agree that every woman should have the right to make decisions about her own body — not the government.”

The White House previewed Harris’s abortion tour as another opportunity for her to “hold extremists accountable for proposing a national abortion ban, call on Congress to restore the protections of Roe, and outline steps the administration is taking to protect access to healthcare.”

Exit polls indicated the issue of abortion was a deciding factor for many people who voted in last year’s midterm elections, undermining predictions Republicans would dominate the 2022 cycle. Democrats are hoping history repeats itself in 2024.
