Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced the Ending DHS Funding for Liberal Propaganda Act on Monday in an effort to prevent the Department of Homeland Security from distributing a “counter-propaganda” grant to fund organizations directed to target conservatives.
“The Biden Administration has time and again demonstrated its willingness to weaponize its power against conservatives,” Hawley said in a release. “My bill simply bars Secretary Mayorkas from funneling taxpayer dollars to programs dedicated to targeting this Administration’s political opponents.”
The bill states that DHS may not issue any grants that are involved in “any programming that engages in partisan political advocacy or promotes discrimination on the basis of political affiliation” and “countering narratives or views on political topics, including COVID-19, vaccination, media bias, immigration, and crime.”
The Media Research Center, a conservative media watchdog group, recently uncovered in an investigation via Freedom of Information Act requests that the DHS was using anti-terrorism grants to target Christians and conservatives.
The University of Rhode Island’s Media Education Lab, funded by the Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant Program, reportedly paid for the “propaganda and misinformation” of conservatives to be gone after.
Journalist Luke Rosiak found that the grant was also used to “pay people to write blogs attacking Trump.”
“We are all living in a darker, scarier, angrier, less hopeful country thanks to Mr. Trump’s influence. Are we on the verge of civil war?” one post said, adding that Trump “was able to crawl into the safety of First Amendment protections.”
Hawley railed against the use of government funds in a letter last week calling for the ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“Now DHS is paying – paying – leftist academics to create “counter-propaganda” on “immigration, racial justice” and COVID. This from the people who brought you the Disinformation Board,” Hawley said on social media last week.
The senator added, “Another reason Mayorkas should be gone.”
