Hillary Clinton slams McCarthy as ‘too weak’ to push back against House Republicans

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is “too weak to stand up against the most rabid” members of his party when asked about the Republican-led impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
“I don’t know how they can proceed with an impeachment if they haven’t had a vote,” Clinton said on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki on Sunday. “I don’t know how they’re just basically blowing off the process.”

This month, McCarthy greenlit the House’s impeachment inquiry into Biden. A move that will help the lower chamber obtain records and other documents from the president and his son, Hunter Biden, relating to alleged foreign business deals.
McCarthy previously said that the House would vote before opening an impeachment inquiry, stating “it would occur through a vote on the floor of the People’s House and not through a declaration by one person.”
While a vote to open the impeachment inquiry is not constitutionally required, the move was a direct reversal of McCarthy’s previous remarks.
“There’s no there, there — and in fact, it seems they know there’s no, there, there,” Clinton said. “And sadly, the Speaker of the House is too weak to stand up against the most rabid, you know, walk of his members who don’t care what the truth or facts are.”
Democrats moved ahead with an impeachment inquiry into former President Donald Trump in 2019 without a floor vote, with Republicans like McCarthy strongly pushing back on the unprecedented process. Although Trump was acquitted in his second impeachment over his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and his first impeachment, Democrats skipping the inquiry vote sparked outrage among Republicans.
Clinton said the impeachment inquiry into Biden was a Republican attempt to “grandstand and try to cause President Biden problems.”
“It’s not a real threat,” Clinton said. “It’s a terrible bother, but more than that, it is a real confession by the Republican Party — they have no agenda, they have no interest in trying to bring people together to solve problems.”

Clinton blamed House Republicans for stalling legislative action on immigration reform, saying they create political problems to use to their benefit.
“I have said for years because I was in the Senate when I voted for immigration reform as a majority of the Senate did, and George W Bush said he would sign it and the House wouldn’t take it because they don’t want a solution to what’s happening on the border.”
