House Democrat Jim McGovern says it’s ‘rich to get a lecture’ on civility from MTG

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) attacked Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for giving a lecture about “civility” on the House floor on Wednesday.

Greene was speaking in favor of censuring Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) for pulling a fire alarm when there was no emergency, in September, by saying he should be treated similarly to those locked up for participating in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The Georgia Republican called the fire alarm incident a “disgrace” for the institution of Congress and said Bowman “should face the same fate” as those at the Capitol riot.

McGovern mocked Greene’s floor speech in a direct rebuttal by invoking his own experience in the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and calling it “rich” to be lectured by her.

“Mr Speaker, it is — it’s really rich to get a lecture from someone about civility, who stood on this House floor and screamed and interrupted the president of the United States during the State of the Union,” McGovern said.

“Or somebody who continues to circle the wagons and cheer on the insurrectionists who attacked this Capitol violently on Jan. 6. I was the last person off the House floor on that day, and I saw what happened. And for people to come down here and defend actions, it is pathetic and disgusting,” he added.

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives moved one step closer to censuring Bowman when it voted against a Democratic effort to table the motion.

If censured, Bowman would be the third House Democrat censured by the chamber this year, after Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) were in earlier months.
