House Republicans believe Jordan would allow floor vote on Israel and Ukraine aid

Several House Republicans have flipped their votes in favor of Republican House speaker nominee Jim Jordan (R-OH), reportedly believing he would allow a floor vote on tying funding for Ukraine and Israel.

A spokesperson for the Republican told the Washington Examiner on Monday that he did not make the promise and that Jordan’s conversations with lawmakers were about working to find the right approach rather than specific promises.

One Republican lawmaker who had spoken with Jordan but who was not named alleged Jordan would “not block a vote” on the matter, according to Axios.

“However you feel about Israel and Ukraine, I think a responsible and reasonable government ought to address those questions separately,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said last week. Gaetz has endorsed Jordan for the speakership.

The Ohio conservative most notably flipped House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL), who claimed Jordan had answered all of his concerns on defense funding.

“@Jim_Jordan and I have had two cordial, thoughtful, and productive conversations over the past two days. We agreed on the need for Congress to pass a strong NDAA, appropriations to fund our government’s vital functions, and other important legislation like the Farm Bill,” Rogers posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday. “As a result, I have decided to support Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House on the floor.”

Rogers previously claimed that “nothing” Jordan did would make him flip his vote and support him as speaker. Reps. Ken Calvert (R-CA) and Ann Wagner (R-MO) also flipped their votes. Calvert stated the decision came after speaking to Jordan about their appropriations and national security goals.

Federal funding for the wars in Israel and Ukraine has been a polarizing issue for House Republicans. Defense hawks have argued that funding for both wars would make the world, including the United States, safer. But over half of the conference voted against supplying more funding for Ukraine last month. Allowing the floor vote could mean the funding is passed due to support from Democrats.

But even with the added votes, Jordan faces a difficult climb to the 217 votes needed to become the next speaker. Jordan can only afford to lose four votes on the House floor since all Democrats are expected to stand behind House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
