How Democrats saving Mike Johnson will put his speakership in greater peril – Washington Examiner

House Democrats have floated coming to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) rescue in the event of a vote to oust him, something that risks jeopardizing his speakership even more.

In February, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said he believed “a reasonable number” of Democrats would vote to keep Johnson as House speaker if hard-liners in the Republican Party turned against him over matters such as Ukraine aid. The possibility has drawn the outrage of many Republicans, who believe at such a polarized time that Democrats coming to his aid would be a death sentence.

“I can tell you this for sure: If there is a motion and Democrats jump in to support Johnson, that greatly diminishes him because then he’ll immediately become the ‘uniparty’ speaker,” a senior House Republican aligned with Johnson told Politico. “Everything would be run on suspension because people would take down rules — or they’ll do continuous motions to vacate.”

Furthermore, the outlet reported that many Republicans are privately admitting it’s unlikely they’ll keep their House majority next election, a loss that would almost certainly force Johnson out if he’s still in the position by then.

“What’s he going to say? ‘Oh, shucks, guys … I ran everything through suspension and lost the majority, and I still want to be your leader’? That’s not going to be tolerated,” the senior Republican said.

Johnson appears safe for the immediate future, as no Republicans, even fellow firebrands such as Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), are backing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) motion to vacate the speakership. But despite Johnson’s overtures, Greene has grown bolder in her attacks on Johnson.

“This isn’t a Republican speaker we have right now. This is a Democrat speaker,” Greene told Tucker Carlson in an interview. “There is zero daylight between what Nancy Pelosi did … and what Mike Johnson is doing. … We don’t know who Mike Johnson is anymore.”

Greene’s labeling of Johnson as a “Democrat speaker” may ring hollow for many Republicans, but it could gain traction if Democrats come to his aid. His confrontation with several controversial matters within his party, including Ukraine aid and surveillance, could also send more hard-liners into Greene’s camp.
