On the first day of Hunter Biden’s gun trial, the president’s son was joined by notable attendees ranging from first lady Jill Biden to controversial Hollywood attorney Kevin Morris.
The president’s son is facing allegations he lied about being a drug addict in 2018 while illegally purchasing a gun in Delaware. Prosecutors say Hunter Biden was addicted to crack cocaine at the time and knew exactly what he was doing. The defense team concedes Hunter Biden was on cocaine but argued he can’t be held accountable for breaking the law because he was in denial of his use. During the first day of the trial, the defense argued, “There’s no such thing as a high-functioning crackhead.”
Hunter Biden’s wife, sister, and mother attended Tuesday’s trial’s opening arguments. Melissa, first daughter Ashley Biden, and Jill Biden were joined in court by Kevin Morris, an attorney who has attracted national attention for his near-obsessive level of support for Hunter Biden.
Morris’s friendship with the president’s son goes back years. During their relationship, the attorney has run the gauntlet on defending Hunter Biden, including lending him money to pay off his tax bill and shielding him from a congressional investigation.
Morris’s role as Hunter Biden’s principal financier has strained the Hollywood attorney’s relationship with his family. According to the New York Post, Morris’s daughter recently told Hunter Biden “to stop taking advantage of my father,” while Morris’s “entire family has abandoned him because they were livid when they found out he was bankrolling everything [for Hunter Biden].”
According to other recent reports, Morris says he is out of cash to help fund Hunter Biden’s defense.
The news comes after one of Morris’s attorneys sent a letter to the House Oversight Committee in January, suggesting Morris had spent over $6.5 million aiding the president’s son.
Morris’s defense has often used questionable means to target Hunter Biden’s investigators. After Marco Polo, an organization headed by former Trump aide Garrett Ziegler, published information from Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop last June, Morris spent months threatening one of the organization’s operatives, suggesting the FBI and Justice Department were surveilling the organization.
Ziegler attended the trial on Tuesday, where he was allegedly told by Hunter Biden’s wife, Melissa, that he did not belong in the court. The Marco Polo owner was allowed to stay.
Another notable figure in court on Tuesday was Abbe Lowell, one of Hunter Biden’s main attorneys. At one time, he represented former President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Lowell served as an ethics adviser to Ivanka Trump while she served in her father’s administration. The attorney also counseled Kushner when he was questioned by congressional members over his use of WhatsApp to communicate with foreigners.
Historically, Lowell has been known for his bipartisan counsel, representing a diverse set of clients from Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to former New York Gov. George Patak, a Republican.

Attorneys Lowell and Morris share one thing in common: This is not the first time the two have rallied behind Hunter Biden.
After Republican midterm victories in 2022, Morris feared a congressional investigation into Hunter Biden. The first son’s financier allegedly urged Hunter Biden’s associates to take stronger action in swiping down rumors about the laptop case and other allegations about the president’s son. In response, Lowell sent a series of letters in February 2023 to federal and state law enforcement agencies demanding an investigation into Marco Polo for publishing the contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop.
