‘Immeasurable strength’: New investigation into Uvalde police officers strays from DOJ analysis

A local investigation into the Uvalde, Texas, police’s response to last year’s Robb Elementary School shooting cleared police of wrongdoing, a departure from the Department of Justice‘s analysis.

The report was made by former police detective Jesse Prado, who was commissioned by the Uvalde City Council. While outlining a series of failures, such as poor training for active shooter situations and poor communication, Prado said the Uvalde officers showed “immeasurable strength” and “level-headed thinking” in their response.

“There were problems all day long with communication and lack of it,” Prado said, according to the Associated Press. “The officers had no way of knowing what was being planned, what was being said. If they would have had a ballistic shield, it would have been enough to get them to the door.”

The largely glowing report drew outrage from parents in attendance, many of whom walked out in the middle of the presentation.

“You said they did it in good faith,” said Kimberly Mata-Rubio, whose daughter was killed in the shooting. “You call that good faith? They stood there 77 minutes.”

“My daughter was left for dead,” another parent, Ruben Zamorra, said. “These police officers signed up to do a job. They didn’t do it.”

Another shouted, “Cowards!”

Further outrage erupted when Prado left after giving the presentation without taking questions.

“Bring him back!” several shouted.

The report is the first to portray Uvalde police in a positive light, with all others, including one from the DOJ, laying scathing criticism upon the response.

“The victims and survivors of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School deserved better,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said when the report was released. “The law enforcement response at Robb Elementary on May 24, 2022, and the response by officials in the hours and days after, was a failure.”
