CNN chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward had to take shelter in a ditch near the border between Israel and Gaza amid a “barrage of rockets.”

Ward joined CNN’s CNN News Central on Monday from a ditch in Israel amid the conflict, which began when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel on Saturday.

“So forgive me. I have a slightly inelegant position, but we have just had a massive barrage of rockets coming in here not too far from us. So we have had to take shelter here by the roadside,” Ward said.

“We’re just about five minutes away,” she added. “Gaza is in that direction. We can hear now a lot of jets in the sky. We can also hear the Iron Dome intercepting a number of those rockets as they were whizzing overhead and making impact in that direction, not too far from here.”

Ward said they went to that location because it was “ground zero” for the terrorist attacks, adding that the location was the “first place where they breached that border wall and they basically drove down this strip.” Once she was given the all-clear by her crew, Ward attempted to figure out what had been occurring on the ground.

“Forgive me,” Ward said. “A little difficult after being crouched in a ditch to know exactly what’s been going on.”

CNN later showed the moments leading up to when Ward and her crew had to take cover, displaying the frantic rush to safety in the ditch as rockets can be heard in the distance.

Ward frequently reports from war zones for the cable network, having been in Afghanistan during the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from the country and in Ukraine during the European country’s war with Russia.

Israel declared war against Hamas, the first time it had declared war against someone since 1973, shortly after the attacks on its country, which saw more than 700 Israelis killed.

A report from the Wall Street Journal suggested that Iran was directly involved in planning the initial attacks against Israel by Hamas.
