Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Tuesday condemned former President Donald Trump’s comments calling Iran-backed Hezbollah “smart,” a rare instance in which the Kentucky senator answered any question about Trump.

“I can’t disagree more. Hezbollah is a terrorist organization just like Hamas. Funded from the same source as Hamas,” McConnell said, answering a question from a reporter during the weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Trump, the front-runner to become the GOP’s 2024 presidential nominee, has faced widespread criticism from the Republican 2024 field and Democrats for calling the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah “very smart” last week during an event during a Club 47 event in West Palm Beach, Florida. The former president also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the lack of intelligence surrounding Hamas’s siege on Israel.

“Thousands of people knew about it, and they let this slip by. That was not a good thing for him or for anybody,” the former president said.

When asked about Trump’s criticism of Netanyahu following the lack of intelligence surrounding Hamas’s siege on Israel, McConnell praised the Israeli leader.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu is one of the great leaders of modern times,” McConnell said.
