Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) said that his trip to Israel over the weekend allowed him to understand “at a deeper emotional level” what Israelis experienced during the terrorist attacks by Hamas earlier this month.
Newsom decried the brutality of the terrorist organization Hamas while speaking in Hong Kong after visiting Israel and discussing the “trauma and the experience” of visiting the Jewish state as the country is engaged in a war in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 terrorist attack, according to Politico.

“The worst part about it — the actual video, I saw heads, beheaded people, their bodies, lay there, dead. To see someone’s eyes and mouth being poked to see if they were alive, to find out they were alive after being shot on the ground,” Newsom said, according to the outlet. “It connects to an understanding of the emotion of the Israelis about the atrocities that occurred, and about the 1,400 lives lost. It’s not intellectual any longer.”
During his brief trip to Israel, he visited a medical center in Tel Aviv and met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Newsom’s trip came shortly after President Joe Biden visited the Jewish state to show his support of the country.
Newsom’s stop in Israel came as part of a larger trip for the California governor to China, where he is discussing cooperation on climate change with Chinese officials.
Biden is making a plea for Congress to pass a supplemental funding package for Ukraine and Israel to aid in their respective wars, as outlined in an Oval Office address last week.

The war in Israel was sparked by terrorist attacks committed by Hamas against Israeli civilians on Oct. 7. The conflict has resulted in more than 6,000 deaths in Israel and Gaza, according to the Associated Press, along with the deaths of at least 30 Americans.
Hamas is currently holding hundreds of civilians, which they captured during the attacks earlier this month. Two American civilians were released from Gaza last week.
