Israel war: Tim Burchett calls Biden trip ‘gutsy, bold move’ but worries for president’s safety

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) commended President Joe Biden‘s trip to Israel during the country’s conflict with Hamas as a “gutsy, bold move,” but he expressed concern for the president’s safety.

The Tennessee Republican compared Hamas terrorists to the Japanese military in World War II, saying how there is a danger when enemies are willing to take themselves out while trying to kill people, while speaking on NewsNation’s Cuomo on Monday.

“I wish the president wasn’t going over there. I think it’s a gutsy, bold move, but I really wish he wasn’t going over there. Because, you know, my dad, my dad fought the Japanese in the Pacific, and he used to say, buddy, when somebody’s willing to lose their life to take you out, there’s not a whole lot you can do sometimes,” Burchett said.

Biden is scheduled to visit Israel on Wednesday, shortly after Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the trip to the Jewish state as a show of support.

Burchett also slammed a proposal by hard-line progressive House Democrats to call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, calling it “probably a pretty good deal” for the terrorist group.

“You got to remember Hamas, first off … where they came over was the gate that’s used for primarily for medical aid and food,” Burchett said. “Hamas just goes in there and slaughters innocent people. Israel, the Jews, they call over there, and they say, ‘Hey, we’re coming through here. Y’all get the hell out of there.’ And then what does Hamas do? They stop them at the border with AKs, and they start shooting their own people,” Burchett said.

“They, they are vicious. They’re savages. They’re terrorists. And unfortunately, innocents are going to get hurt, and innocents are probably going to lose their lives. But Israel cannot continue down this path of appeasement,” the Tennessee Republican said.

Israel declared war against Hamas, the first time it had declared war since 1973, shortly after the attacks earlier this month. The conflict has killed at least 4,000 people in Israel and Gaza since the first attacks by Hamas, according to the Associated Press. The State Department has said that at least 30 Americans are among the dead in Israel.
