Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz resigns – Washington Examiner

Centrist Israeli official Benny Gantz announced his resignation, one day after Israel rescued four hostages held by Hamas during an operation in Gaza.

Gantz is a former military leader who joined the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks as a show of unity. Netanyahu can remain in power without Gantz but will be more reliant on figures from the country’s political right, the Associated Press reported.

The move was not entirely unexpected, as Gantz had previously threatened to leave the government by June 8 if Netanyahu did not create a new plan for what Gaza would look like following the war.

The announcement comes one day after the Israeli military rescued four hostages in operations that Hamas says killed more than 210 people.

Gantz reportedly delayed his announcement by one day on account of the hostage rescue mission.
