Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) pleaded guilty on Thursday to willfully setting off a fire alarm after he was captured on camera last month pulling the alarm in a congressional building amid the House voting on a critical government funding bill.
Bowman will pay a $1,000 fine after he was charged with a misdemeanor in Washington, D.C., Superior Court with “willfully and knowingly” giving a “false alarm of a fire,” in violation of city code.

As part of his plea agreement, he is also required to write and deliver an apology letter to the U.S. Capitol Police chief.
Bowman now has a sentencing hearing set to take place in three months, on Jan. 29, but the charge will be dropped at the time of the hearing as long as he has followed the terms of his agreement.
Bowman has maintained that he pulled the alarm, which prompted a temporary evacuation, in an attempt to exit the House building. Bowman said he had no intention of obstructing the House’s official business or halting the vote taking place.
Confronted by reporters about why he did not fight the charge if he was innocent, he replied, “What are you talking about?”
“Listen, you know, I pulled the fire alarm and I did not do it to disrupt a court proceeding, like I said. I was trying to get out the door. I was rushing to a vote,” he said. “I’m thankful that we have an agreement in place. I’m thankful in three months it’s gonna be dismissed, and now let’s move on.”
He added that he regretted his actions, saying, “It’s pretty embarrassing.”

Earlier Thursday, Bowman surrendered to police and Fox News cameras caught the New York Democrat, who is also a member of the hard-left “Squad,” turning himself in.
