Jeffries brushes off Biden’s liability to Democrats – Washington Examiner

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) dismissed concerns that President Joe Biden will negatively affect vulnerable House Democrats if he remains the party’s nominee.

Jeffries told reporters at a press conference Thursday that Democrats will win back the House if they can “clearly communicate” their agenda. When asked if he is worried if Biden is a liability for the party’s most vulnerable members, Jeffries said, “No.”

“House Democrats will win back control of the House of Representatives on Nov. 5 and vacate the extreme MAGA Republican majority as long as we are able to clearly communicate our agenda of putting people over politics, lowering costs, growing the middle class, defending fundamental freedoms and democracy and contrast that with the extreme MAGA Republican agenda, which will destroy working families and the middle-class way of life as we know it,” Jeffries said.

Jeffries did not provide any direct answers on whether he believes Biden should step aside as the Democratic presidential nominee. Instead, he repeated a phrase that he stated throughout most of this week.

“Throughout this week, as House Democrats, we have engaged in a process of talking to each other,” the minority leader said. “Those conversations have been candid, comprehensive, and clear-eyed and they continue. Until that process has concluded, I’m not going to address what any outside stakeholders may have to say about this matter.”

The conference began minutes after an NBC News reported that several Biden officials closely connected to the president’s reelection bid said he has zero chance of winning in 2024.

Ten House Democrats and one senator, Peter Welch (D-VT), have publicly called on Biden to withdraw from the race. Many have praised the president’s record in office over the years but argued it is time to “pass the torch” to a new leader.

Three of the Democrats, Reps. Angie Craig (D-MN), Hillary Scholten (D-MI), and Pat Ryan (D-NY), are considered vulnerable members this cycle. Scholten’s race is rated “likely Democrat” and Ryan’s “lean Democrat” by the Cook Political Report.

Biden previously said he planned to be a bridge to a new generation of Democratic leaders. He has said he is running in 2024, despite several members and Democratic leaders insinuating that the choice is not finalized.

Eyes will be on the president’s press conference Thursday night following the NATO summit this week, with reports that several House Democrats are preparing to call on Biden to withdraw from the race if he performs poorly.
