Jeopardy!’s Amy Schneider asks non-transgender people to ‘speak up’ for trans rights

Jeopardy! champion Amy Schneider asked people to “speak up” for the rights of transgender people, arguing they “can’t defend [themselves] alone.”

Schneider, a transgender woman, made the request during an appearance on the talk show The View and was asked what people can do to help the transgender community as “anti-trans bills sweep the country.” Schneider described a time when a bartender was polite several years back and that while the bartender likely does not remember their encounter, Schneider will “remember it forever.”

“But I think in the environment that we’re in, it’s so important, you know, there’s not that many trans people, and we can’t defend ourselves alone,” Schneider said. “And it is so important for non-trans people to, you know, just speak up and let the people around you know you support trans people. Because so many people are just not supporting it out of momentum. Because back in the day, nobody supported trans people.”

Schneider added that while many people feel all their friends do not support transgender rights, hearing just one person speak out for transgender people can make them reflect and think, “Maybe I need to rethink this.”

Schneider’s appearance comes amid the promotion of Schneider’s new book titled In the Form of a Question, released on Tuesday. The hosts of The View announced all guests of the show that day would receive a copy of Schneider’s book.

On the game show Jeopardy!, Schneider became only the fourth contestant to surpass $1 million in winnings in January 2022, ending the run with $1,382,800. As of 2023, it is still the fifth-highest in the show’s history.

Schneider’s successful run on the show lasted 40 games, which is second only to Ken Jennings’s 74-game streak in 2004.
