Jim Messina urges Biden campaign to draw ‘straight’ contrast against Trump in 2024

Political adviser Jim Messina is urging President Joe Biden to draw a “straight contrast” between himself and former President Donald Trump to sway voters to his side, comparing the tactic to one former President Barack Obama used.

Messina, who was Obama’s reelection campaign manager, said Biden is doing exactly what Obama did in 2011, which is talking about his administration’s record and his personal agenda successes.

“But we were behind in the polls the whole time until we drove a contrast with Mitt Romney. The moment we drew that contrast, we started moving in the polls,” Messina said on Sunday on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki. “So my beginning of the year wish is just a straight contrast between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.”

Messina said Trump will be the Republican nominee despite GOP voters thinking that they want different candidates in 2024 — such as former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, who is steadily rising to second place in the Republican primary in several state polls.

The former Obama deputy chief of staff for operations said this could be used to Biden’s campaign’s benefit.

“We are where we are, and we’re gonna have a straight Biden versus Trump ballot choice,” Messina said. “And the more the Biden campaign can drive that, the better their poll numbers will be.”
