President Joe Biden said in a recent interview that he was hesitant to join former President Barack Obama’s Democratic ticket in 2008, revealing his mother pushed him to serve.

Speaking to Conan O’Brien on his SiriusXM podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, in an episode released Wednesday, Biden said he initially didn’t want to be vice president when he was asked by Obama.

Biden first called his mother, Catherine Finnegan, when Obama asked him to be his running mate 15 years ago.

“I called her, and I said, ‘The president asked me to consider being vice president. I don’t want to do that.’ I said, ‘Barack, I don’t wanna be vice president.’ Finally, he said, ‘Well, damn, it’s only you,’” Biden told O’Brien.

Biden said Obama told him to “Go home and talk it over to your family” while he was on the train.

“It was when he [Obama] became the de facto nominee in August. So I go home, sit everybody down. Everybody wants me to do it. I didn’t want to do it,” Biden added.

Biden’s mother ultimately convinced him to join the Democratic ticket that would make history, electing Obama as America’s first black president.

The president recalled his mother saying, “Let me get this straight, honey. The first black man has a chance to be president, he says he needs you, and you told him no?”

Biden served as Obama’s vice president in the White House from 2009 to 2017 before being elected to the highest office in the nation himself in 2020. Obama endorsed his former vice president in 2020 and has appeared in his 2024 campaign.

“He’s delivered for the American people — and he’ll continue to do so once he’s re-elected. Let’s get to work!” Obama wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in April, retweeting Biden’s video announcement and linking Biden’s campaign website.
