Joy Reid contends DeSantis uses ‘openly fascist’ tactics to stop Amendment 4 – Washington Examiner

MSNBC anchor Joy Reid said Tuesday that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) utilized the government in an “openly fascist” manner to oppose Amendment 4, suggesting the governor wants this to be his legacy.

Amendment 4, an abortion ballot measure that would prevent Florida from creating legislation that would “prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health,” failed to garner 60% of the vote needed to pass on Election Day, with the final tally getting 58% of approval. Reid suggested this is part of DeSantis’s intent for Florida to “buck the trend” in states passing “the right to bodily autonomy.”

“He’s put everything on it, including, as you said, threats, whatever it takes to try to make sure that that amendment fails using the power of government in a way that is, I would say, openly fascist and very determined,” Reid said.

Reid also argued that DeSantis rallying in opposition was part of the governor’s plan to allow him to become “the heir to Donald Trump” in the Republican Party. DeSantis was one of several Republicans to run in the party’s 2024 presidential primary election alongside former President Donald Trump, though the governor suspended his campaign in January and endorsed the former president.

Another amendment that Florida residents got to vote on, Amendment 3, also failed to reach the 60% threshold in support needed to pass. The tally stood at 55.7% in support versus 44.3% in opposition when the Associated Press called the race after 8:30 p.m. Eastern time, with about 90% of the ballots counted.

In the 2024 presidential election, Florida was called for Trump on Tuesday night, a state he has won in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. Trump is running against Vice President Kamala Harris.
