Vice President Kamala Harris explained why she and President Joe Biden are polling close to GOP front-runner Donald Trump in projections for the 2024 presidential election, ultimately repeating a projection: “We’re going to win.”
Harris appeared on CBS News’s 60 Minutes Sunday night, where she and correspondent Bill Whitaker explored a variety of topics, including the conflict in Israel, the war in Ukraine, and gun violence within the United States.

But it was when next year’s election was brought up that the vice president sounded perhaps her most resolute. “I’m not a political pundit, so I — I’m not gonna speak to that,” Harris responded when Whitaker asked why polls don’t have her and Biden 30 points ahead of Trump, a man facing more than 90 criminal charges.
“What I will say is this: When the American people are able to take a close look at election time on their options, I think the choice is gonna be clear. Bill, we’re gonna win. Let me just tell you that. We’re gonna win. And I’m not saying it’s gonna be easy. But we will win,” Harris added.
The second in line to the presidency has faced criticism for her efforts at the southern border, perceived lack of awareness as a leader and politician, and purported irrelevance to the Biden administration and future of the Democratic Party. With concerns over Biden’s age prompting questions about the Democratic Party’s presidential heir, Harris has not exactly thrilled party leaders or bolstered Biden’s position going into a crucial election cycle.
Whitaker pressed her on whether voters are actually listening to what she and Biden are doing. “Do you have to ask yourself, ‘Why are people seeming not to hear our message?’”

“I look at it more as let’s keep gettin’ out there,” she responded. “And, as with any election, we gotta make our case to the American people. That’s part of our responsibility. And that’s this process. And that’s what it is. And that’s a fair process.”
Harris has a net approval rating of -16.8%, according to RealClearPolitics. Biden only fares slightly better at a negative 13.7%. The outlet currently has Trump leading Biden by .07% in a hypothetical 2024 matchup.
