Kamala Harris won’t stand for discussion of DEI going the way of ‘woke’

Vice President Kamala Harris railed against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives being lumped in with the “woke” movement.

Harris was at the College of Southern Nevada Thursday as part of her 14-date college tour aimed at reaching young voters and talking up Democratic positions on abortion, gun control, LGBT rights, and climate change. The tour began last month.

“There are some forces in our country that are trying to say that it is a bad term to talk about DEI. They’re trying to do with DEI what they did with woke,” Harris said. “We gotta pay attention to that they’re trying to suggest that it is somehow wrong to talk about the diversity, equity, and inclusion, that it is somehow wrong to talk about the fact that when you look at, for example, the fact that I am the first woman of color to be vice president of the United States — that the piece about diversity is somehow not important.”

Harris is on President Joe Biden’s ticket for reelection in 2024. Should Biden win, he would be 86 years old at the end of his second term. Meanwhile, Harris is 58.

“To the young leaders at the College of Southern Nevada: Know your power and use it,” Harris wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “When you lead, people in your community, across our nation, and around the world will benefit.”

The college tour hasn’t been without hiccups. Harris was at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University when “Hail to the Chief” began playing. This is known as the presidential anthem, reserved for the presence of the commander in chief, hence the title. Typically, “Hail Columbia” is the anthem played for the vice president.

It was unclear if this was a mistake made on the part of the White House staff or university staff. The song cut out abruptly before it could finish, which was about 16 seconds.
