Kareem Abdul-Jabbar hospitalized after breaking hip during fall

Former NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was hospitalized after falling and breaking his hip Friday.
Abdul-Jabbar was at a concert in Los Angeles Friday night when the incident happened, according to his representative Deborah Morales. Paramedics arrived at the scene to transport the former basketball player to a hospital.

“Last night while attending a concert , Kareem had an accidental fall and broke his hip. He will have surgery today,” Morales’s statement read. “We are all deeply appreciative of all the support for Kareem, especially from the Los Angeles Fire Department who assisted Kareem on site and the amazing medical team and doctors at UCLA Hospital who are taking great care of Kareem now.”
At 76 years old, Abdul-Jabbar has suffered the leading health concern for the elderly. Eighty-six percent of broken hips happen to those 65 years old or over, according to the National Institutes of Health. To complicate his health, Abdul-Jabbar is 7 feet, 2 inches tall.

The NBA touted Abdul-Jabbar as its No. 1 scorer for 39 years until Lebron James passed him in 2023. Abdul-Jabbar played a total of 20 seasons of basketball between his time with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Now, Abdul-Jabbar is the chairman of the Skyhook Foundation, which he created to bring STEM education to fourth- and fifth-grade students in Los Angeles.
