The Labour Party‘s conference was disrupted when a protester ran to the stage and threw glitter all over Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on Tuesday morning in the United Kingdom.

“We demand a people’s house, we are in crisis — politics needs an update. We are in crisis,” the protester who stormed the Liverpool stage shouted.

The man who stormed the stage was seen being dragged out of the conference by security and put into a police van.

People Demand Democracy, a group that uses disruptive tactics to push for electoral reform, claimed responsibility for the demonstration. The group calls for “an upgrade to the U.K. political system using civil disobedience to get their message across.”

The protest is linked to a campaign called Just Stop Oil, known for similar tactics, such as spraying buildings with orange paint and sprinkling glitter at sporting events.

The group demanded the Labour Party “hold new national elections with a proportional voting system and set up a House of Citizens within six months of getting into office.”

It warned that if its demands are not met, “People Demand Democracy will take proportionate action to get our message across to you and the Labour Party leadership.”

The interruption did not seem to faze Starmer, who wiped off the glitter, removed his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and delivered a speech unveiling his “mission for government.”

“If he thinks that bothers me, he doesn’t know me,” Starmer said in response to the demonstration. “Protest, not power, that is why we changed our party conference.”

A spokesman for the Labour Party told the BBC, “It shows his strength of character that he got on and delivered the speech of his life.”

Starmer vowed to build a “new generation of towns” featuring 1.5 million new homes in the U.K.

A similar European demonstration meant to shock and humiliate occurred in 2021, when French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face by a member of the public as he addressed a crowd. The assailant faced four months in jail.
