Khanna admits Biden reelection is ‘hard’ as he’s ‘never been a front-runner’

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) shared his thoughts on President Joe Biden’s strategy ahead of his 2024 reelection bid, saying Biden thrives at being the underdog.

Khanna appeared on CNN News Central Friday to react to Biden’s dwindling poll numbers. He has long defended the president, appearing on conservative and liberal outlets alike to make arguments in Biden’s favor.

“Look, it’s going to be a hard election. The president, though, has never been a front-runner. He wasn’t a front-runner when he ran for president in 1988, he wasn’t in 2008, and he wasn’t when he won the nomination in 2020,” Khanna said. “So I actually think he should embrace the role as someone who is going to have to fight for this like Harry Truman did, run against a do-nothing Republican Congress, go out there barnstorm the country, talk about being ‘Scranton Joe’ and what he’s doing for the working class.”

“And embrace the role that yes, he’s down right now in the polls and he’s gonna be an underdog who comes back,” he added. “Americans love that kind of a story, and I think the president is at the best when he is out there fighting.”

Biden faces opposition for his party’s nomination in 2024 despite being the incumbent. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), news anchor Cenk Uygur, and author Marianne Williamson are all vying for the Democratic presidential nomination.
