Lawler attacks Mondaire Jones over Pelosi endorsement: ‘It won’t help you’

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) bashed his challenger, former Democratic New York Rep. Mondaire Jones, for touting an endorsement from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), saying it would not help Jones in 2024 any more than it did in 2022.

The New York Republican also bragged that his victory in 2022 over a different Democratic incumbent helped “end Nancy Pelosi’s reign” as House speaker, including a picture of himself with Pelosi made into a variation of the “thug life” meme.

“I’m proud to have helped end Nancy Pelosi’s reign as Speaker of the House. Enjoy her endorsement [Mondaire Jones] — it didn’t help you when you ran in New York City last year and it won’t help you in the Hudson Valley next year,” Lawler posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Jones, who unsuccessfully ran in New York’s 10th Congressional District in 2022, is running for Lawler’s seat in next year’s election. The New York Democrat lost in the primary to now-Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) in last year’s House race despite receiving Pelosi’s endorsement. Jones said he was “honored” to receive Pelosi’s endorsement for 2024.

Lawler is one of several incumbent New York House Republicans in swing districts. New York’s 17th Congressional District is rated as “Democrat +3,” according to the Cook Political Report’s Partisan Voting Index, and the 2024 race for the seat has been rated as a “toss-up.”

House Republicans will be on defense in several key districts in New York, and throughout the country, as they seek to maintain and expand their 221-212 majority in the lower chamber of Congress.
