Lawmakers Lay Into Trump

Multiple GOP lawmakers blasted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following the agency’s greenlighting of a new abortion drug on Thursday.

The flurry of criticism comes after the FDA approved of a new abortion pill from the drugmaker Evita Solutions, a company whose public mission is to “seek to normalize abortion care,” and “commit to making care accessible to all.”

“This is shocking,” Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley said on Thursday in a post to X. “FDA has just approved ANOTHER chemical abortion drug, when the evidence shows chemical abortion drugs are dangerous and even deadly for the mother. And of course 100% lethal to the child.” (RELATED: FDA Quietly Approved New Abortion Drug After Promising Safety Investigation)

“FDA had promised to do a top-to-bottom safety review of the chemical abortion drug, but instead they’ve just greenlighted new versions of it for distribution,” the senator continued. “I have lost confidence in the leadership at FDA.”

The drug is a new generic version of the abortion pill mifepristone, and is intended to terminate pregnancies up to 70 days of gestation,” according to the FDA approval.

Hawley also noted the drugmaker’s political public stance on gender ideology, adding in his post, “[T]he corporation the FDA just approved to distribute MORE abortion drugs doesn’t even believe there is such a thing as a ‘woman.’”

The company’s website states, “Evita Solutions believes that all people should have access to safe, affordable, high-quality, effective, and compassionate abortion care, regardless of their race, sex, gender, age, sexuality, income, or where they live,” appearing to suggest that males could get pregnant and therefore have abortions.

Republican West Virginia Rep. Riley Moore urged Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA commissioner Dr. Marty Makary to “reverse course immediately,” stating on X that “[c]hemical abortion kills children and harms mothers.” The FDA is an agency within the HHS.

“Wow! The FDA just approved a generic version of the abortion pill, Mifepristone, a drug that ends a baby’s life 100% of the time and harms mothers,” wrote Republican North Carolina Rep. Mark Harris in a post to X. “The FDA announced a new safety study just days ago, so why this new move now?”

Kennedy in September launched an investigation into mifepristone’s risks. Makary in a Sept. 19 letter to 22 GOP state attorneys general wrote that his agency is conducting a “review of the evidence, including real-world outcomes and evidence, relating to the safety and efficacy of the drug.”

Democratic Washington Senator Patty Murray weighed in on the issue, saying in a post on X, “The data is as clear as ever, mifepristone is safe and effective.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence also commented on the FDA’s approval, noting his previous opposition to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination, “particularly over the concern that he would expand access to abortion, as he has done today.”

“The Trump Administration’s approval of a generic chemical abortion drug is a complete betrayal of the pro-life movement that elected President Trump,” Pence said on X Thursday. “President Trump must immediately reverse this decision. RFK must resign and give President Trump the opportunity to appoint a new Secretary of HHS who will protect the sanctity of life.”

Harris’ team directed the DCNF to Harris’ post on X when asked for further comment.

Evita Solutions, Senators Hawley’s and Murray’s offices, and Rep. Moore’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
