Lindsey Graham to wage ‘war’ on bill enforcing Chick-fil-A’s open Sundays

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) threatened to get involved in upcoming legislation in New York to change Chick-fil-A’s operating hours.

Graham took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to decry the Rest Stop Restaurant Act, which proposes all food and beverage companies along the State Thruway and at the Port Authority in New York and New Jersey stay open seven days a week. Chick-fil-A has a 33-year contract with the Thruway Authority service to operate seven restaurants there.

“This is war,” Graham said of the legislation. “If this goes forward, I will be introducing legislation withholding federal funds from any city or state that requires Chick-fil-A to stay open on Sunday. The founders of Chick-fil-A made a decision early on to close on Sunday, consistent with their faith. For any government to try to reverse this decision flies in the face of who we are as Americans.”

The fast food chain is a Georgia-based company. It opened its first location in New York, which is the restaurant chain’s largest in the country, in 2015.

“Chick-fil-A is a great company with thousands of locations serving the public with a quality product and taking care of their employees. New York is off base and their actions will not go unanswered,” Graham wrote.

The Thruway was expecting three more Chick-fil-A restaurants to open in the near future. It is a nearly 500-mile-long highway.
