Louisiana Republicans propose bills combating potential state gas-powered vehicle ban – Washington Examiner

Republican lawmakers in Louisiana are attempting to pump the brakes on the potential statewide ban on the sale of combustion engine vehicles by introducing two bills that would block the restriction.

One of the bills was postponed Thursday, while another is expected to be discussed next week in the state House of Representatives, the Center Square reported.

Rep. Dodie Horton proposed House Bill 515 in an effort to prohibit the government’s restriction or limits on selling customers gas-powered vehicles. Horton’s bill would also ensure that the state’s Air Pollutant Emission Control program does not prohibit residents from purchasing gas-powered vehicles.

However, Horton said she would much rather lend her support to the bill that was deferred, which was authored by Rep. Phillip Tarver, who owns a Toyota car dealership, according to the outlet.

Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a proposal that, if approved, would mandate that all cars and light trucks have an average of about 58 miles per gallon by 2032 and require automakers to sell more electric and battery-powered vehicles.

The legislation follows Republicans’ disapproval of the electric vehicle mandate President Joe Biden’s administration has been pushing, which would require two of every three vehicles sold to be battery-powered.

In January, Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) and 15 other Republican governors penned a letter to Biden to condemn the “unrealistic EV mandate,” claiming that customers are not interested in it.

Biden administration officials claim the EV initiative would be a greener alternative to combustion engine vehicles, while a large number of consumers remain skeptical due to the reliability and prices of electric vehicles which have taken on battery troubles in recent years. The auto industry has also expressed grievances with the administration’s push for restricting gas-powered vehicles, often saying the demand for electric vehicles is not keeping up with the increasing production of EVs being delivered to dealerships.
