Maine shooting: 16 dead after shootings at multiple locations in Lewiston

Police in Lewiston, Maine, have ordered people and businesses to shelter in place after shootings at multiple locations left 16 people dead, according to CNN.

CNN reported Wednesday that between 50 and 60 people had been hurt in the incidents across the town as well.

Authorities in the state were investigating multiple areas as of Wednesday night, according to CNN.

A possible suspect was in custody as of around 9:20 p.m., according to Fox News’s Jacqui Heinrich. She also reported a higher death count at 22.

One shooting broke out at a bowling alley in Lewiston, and additional shots fired were reported at a local bar and a Walmart distribution center, according to ABC News.

In a post on Facebook, the Lewiston Police Department asked locals to “stay off the roads to allow emergency responders access to the hospitals.” It added pictures of the shooter and what appeared to be his vehicle and asked the public for help identifying him.

President Joe Biden has been made aware of the situation and is being kept up to date.

“The President has been briefed on what’s known so far about the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine and will continue to receive updates,” the White House press office said.
