Maine shooting: 22 dead after shootings at multiple locations in Lewiston

Police in Lewiston, Maine, have ordered people and businesses to shelter in place after shootings at multiple locations left 22 people dead, according to CNBC.

CNBC reported Wednesday that between 50 and 60 people had been hurt in two businesses in “active shooter events.”

The Lewiston Police Department identified Robert Card, 40, as “a person of interest regarding the mass shooting at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation,” and warned that he “should be considered armed and dangerous.”

“This is a very active and dynamic situation. The image of at least one active killer has been released by police. He is armed with a tactical rifle,” Jim Cavanaugh, an NBC News law enforcement contributor and a former special agent at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told CNBC in a text message.

“Law Enforcement is now swarming the area attempting to locate, isolate and eliminate the active killer or killers,” he added.

A possible suspect was in custody as of around 9:20 p.m., according to Fox News’s Jacqui Heinrich. She also reported the death count at 22.

One shooting broke out at a bowling alley in Lewiston, and additional shots fired were reported at a local bar, according to ABC News.

In a post on Facebook, the Lewiston Police Department asked locals to “stay off the roads to allow emergency responders access to the hospitals.” It added pictures of the shooter and what appeared to be his vehicle and asked the public for help identifying him.

President Joe Biden has been made aware of the situation and is being kept up to date.

“The President has been briefed on what’s known so far about the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine and will continue to receive updates,” the White House press office said.

Biden individually spoke to Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME), Sens. Angus King (I-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME), and Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) by phone, pledging full federal support.

Mills also announced that she is being updated on the shooting.

“I am aware of and have been briefed on the active shooter situation in Lewiston,” she said in a statement. “I urge all people in the area to follow the direction of State and local enforcement. I will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials.”
