Maine shooting: Gov. Janet Mills announces 18 people killed in mass shooting

Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME) said on Thursday that 18 people were killed and 13 were injured in the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday.

Robert Card, 40, is the person of interest in a mass shooting that occurred at two locations in Lewiston: a bowling alley called Sparetime Recreation and Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant. Mills and Maine Department of Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck confirmed during a press conference that Card is still at large as of now.

“The full weight of my administration is behind law enforcement efforts to capture the person of interest, Robert Card, to hold whoever’s responsible for this atrocity accountable under the full force of state and federal law and to seek full justice for the victims and their families,” Mills said.

Maine State Police Col. William Ross said seven people were killed at Sparetime Recreation, one woman and six men. Eight people were killed at Schemengees Bar, seven men inside the establishment and one man outside. Three people were transported along with the injured to the hospital but died from their wounds.

Eight of the 18 people have been identified.  Ross announced that Card has an arrest warrant out for eight counts of murder, as well.

“As the people are identified, the counts will probably go to the total of 18,” Ross added.

Mills said it was a “dark day” for her and for the city of Lewiston, which is home to 1.3 million people.

“I know that the people of Lewiston are enduring immeasurable pain,” Mills said. “I wish I could take that pain off your hearts off your shoulders, but I promise you this, we will all help you carry that grief.”
