Robert Card, the suspect wanted in connection with Wednesday’s mass shooting that left 18 people dead and injured 13, was found dead Friday evening with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck said during a Saturday morning press conference that Card’s body was discovered around 7:45 p.m. Friday at the Maine Recycling Corporation, located in Lisbon Falls, where Card had an “employment relationship.”

The recycling center is located at 61 Capital Ave, Lisbon. Sauschuck said the Maine State Police tactical team located Card’s body in an unlocked recycling trailer. The main location had been cleared twice by the Lisbon Police Department, Maine Police Chief Ryan McGee, and other individuals.

Sauschuck credited the owner of the facility for pointing out additional trailers across the street that still belong to the recycling center — those were not checked in initial searches.

“We cleared the trailers, we cleared trailers that are there on that business footprint,” Sauschuck said. “Nobody had any idea that across the street — across Capitol Avenue — there’s an overflow parking lot which is recycling corporation property.”

On Friday, investigators conducted a river search in the town of Lisbon, near where officials found a vehicle connected to Card. A firearm was found in the white Subaru connected to Card near the Lisbon boat launch, Sauschuck confirmed Saturday, noting it was “a long gun style,” but he did not “have the make and model.”

Sauschuck also said “a couple of firearms” were found at the scene but was unable to provide additional details — meaning three firearms total were discovered.

“To my understanding, that was the only firearm that was found inside the car,” Sauschuck said, noting additional information will come to light once impounded affidavits are released and search warrants are obtained.

Sauschuck said law enforcement and other officials will be investigating throughout the weekend at the two shooting locations — Schemengees Bar and Grill and bowling alley Just-In-Time Recreation.
