The Sagadahoc Sheriff’s Office revealed that the Lewiston, Maine, shooter was previously known as possibly dangerous by authorities.
On Monday, Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry revealed the family of Robert Card informed police as early as May 3 that members were concerned over a decline in his mental health and that he had access to firearms. The Army Reserve made further requests that Card be checked. Deputies made two wellness checks to his residence, but nothing came of it.

“A deputy visited Mr. Card’s residence on Sept. 15, 2023, and Sept. 16, 2023,” a statement from Merry read.
“Mr. Card was not at his residence during the first visit, and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office sent a File 6 — an attempt to locate teletype — to other law enforcement agencies,” the sheriff said.
“The alert included a warning that Mr. Card was known to be armed and dangerous and included details of his behavior. The alert urged that officers use extreme caution,” the release read.
The File 6 alert was canceled a month later — just a week before the shooting.

Merry noted that the Army Reserve was involved in Card’s case, and Card’s commander told law enforcement that he didn’t have access to reserve unit firearms anymore.
The sheriff concluded by saying that he believes his office handled the situation correctly, in line with existing policies, but a review of how it handles wellness checks will be conducted.
