Majority of college grads and independents not behind Trump in early states: Poll

Former President Donald Trump has yet to win over college-educated voters or independents, at least according to a new survey.

The AP Votecast survey asked 1,989 Republican primary voters from Iowa and New Hampshire amid their respective caucus and primary contests, along with 915 Democratic primary voters. The poll found roughly six out of ten college graduates did not support Trump. Another two-thirds of self-identified independent voters asked did not support him either.

Trump still swept the Republican contests in both states, prompting Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to drop out of the race after the Iowa caucus. Following Trump’s most recent win, he threatened that donors to his final GOP opponent, Nikki Haley, would be “permanently barred” from his campaign.

According to the 2020 AP Votecast, 43% of nationwide voters were white without college degrees, and Trump won over 62% of this same group.

The Washington Examiner reached out to Trump’s campaign for a response to the results.

Meanwhile, almost nine in ten Democratic primary voters in these two states promised their vote to Biden.

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5% among Republican primary voters and plus or minus 4.6% among Democratic voters.
