Majority of voters say Biden’s age will affect 2024 decision: Poll

A majority of voters said President Joe Biden’s age will affect their 2024 election decisions, according to a new poll.

A NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ poll found that 72% of registered voters said the 80-year-old president’s age would be a factor in their decision. At the end of a second term, Biden would be 86 years old.

For 40% of respondents, his age would “strongly impact” their vote. Roughly 19% said their vote would be “somewhat” affected by age. Thirteen percent claimed the president’s age would “slightly impact” their vote.

About 28% said Biden’s age wouldn’t affect their voting decision “at all.”

Additionally, 74% reported they are either “very” or “somewhat concerned” about Biden’s cognitive health and its effect on his capability to serve another term.

Just 14% weren’t concerned “at all” about his cognitive health’s bearing on his ability to serve another term.

When it comes to former President Donald Trump, 77 years old, the majority of voters are similarly concerned about his cognitive health and its effect on him serving another term. While voters share the same concern about Trump, the percentage who said so was significantly less than those who raised alarms over Biden’s cognitive health, at 59%. Twenty-three percent said they aren’t worried about Trump’s cognitive health affecting his performance in a second term “at all.”

The new poll reported similar results to a recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, in which 77% of U.S. adults said Biden is too old to effectively serve another term, and 51%, more than half, said the same about Trump.

Despite the documented and significant concerns over age for each candidate, Biden and Trump are both expected to be the nominees in 2024 for their respective parties.

When reached for comment, Biden’s reelection campaign referred the Washington Examiner to a recent Economist/YouGov poll of U.S. citizens, in which the two men were in a dead heat, Biden with 39% and Trump with 38%. However, among registered voters, Biden beat Trump by five percentage points, 45% to 40%, outside of the 3.2 percentage point margin of error.

The two have been similarly neck and neck in polls across the board during the campaign season, particularly in battleground states. But, in a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll that critics are calling an outlier, Trump leads Biden by nearly 10 percentage points among U.S. adults, which is outside the margin of error. The Washington Post, itself, noted the poll “is significantly at odds with other public polls that show the general election contest a virtual dead heat.”
