Malia Obama makes Sundance debut with film

Malia Obama appeared at the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday ahead of a screening of her film The Heart.

The daughter of former President Barack Obama submitted her film to the festival under the name Malia Ann. The Heart had its international premiere last year, but this will be Malia Obama’s first Sundance screening.

This film centers on a man grieving the death of his mother. The Heart is “about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret,” according to Malia Obama.

“We hope that you enjoy the film and that it makes you feel a bit less lonely or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are,” she said.

This comes almost three years after Malia Obama was hired by comedian and rapper Donald Glover as a writer on the series Swarm. The single-season program released last year received three Primetime Emmy nominations, among them one for outstanding writing for a limited or anthology series or movie.

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival, based in Park City, Utah, is the 40th. It began Thursday and will continue through Jan. 28. Malia Obama’s film is one of 82 to be screened during the event, along with eight series and one interactive experience.
