Man blinded by Denver police during George Floyd protest receives $2.3 million settlement

A Colorado man who lost his eye after Denver police struck him with a pepper ball while walking to his car during a 2020 George Floyd protest was approved to receive a $2.3 million settlement.

Jax Feldmann alleged that as he was walking away from work on May 30, 2020, he was hit by a pepper ball, an irritant projectile that had been fired from a police officer and ricocheted off a streetlamp, according to a report.

The impact pushed his eye back and damaged his retina and two other layers of his eye.

Feldmann insists that he was not actively engaging in the protest when he was shot, and his injury has left him changed forever.

“I saw a cop truck pull up with two cops standing on the side of the vehicle, and all of a sudden, I got hit in the eye,” he said.

“The organ I was born with and planning on having my entire life shouldn’t have been taken away.”

No individual officer has been charged for Feldmann’s injuries, and the Denver City Council approved his settlement.

Denver has dished out over $20 million to individuals related to the 2020 protests.
